Convertible cars have long been known as some of the most attractive and fun cars in the industry. With the ability to retract your entire roof, convertible cars allow you to feel the wind in your hair and experience a whole new dimension of driving (or riding for that matter). All benefits aside, however, it can be hard to take care of a convertible top. Not only do you have to be careful not to ruin the roof or the mechanism, but you also have to maintain your convertible top well to keep it looking and feeling great all throughout the year.
Basic convertible top care information
– Try to clean your convertible top at least every three or six months.
– Remember that sunshine works against your lovely convertible, so park in the shade when possible.
– Common convertible top problems include discoloration, scratches, and plastic window distortion.
– If you have a bad problem, such as a tear, a hole, a burn, or a bad stain, you may need to get the help of a pro.
Get the right products for your type of top.
Convertible tops can be made of various materials, including vinyl or fabric for soft tops, and the more modern hard tops constructed much like the rest of your car’s exterior. Make sure to get the auto detailing product that corresponds to the specific type of convertible top you have. You may want to use a kit of products, including a cleaner, conditioner, and protectant. Chemical-free or mild solutions may be more beneficial for the longevity of your top.
Start with a good washing.
Before you get down to actually treating the top, you have to give it a good washing first. Use the proper cleaner along with a soft brush or sponge to remove contaminants, soaping and rinsing off the top thoroughly.
Apply the protectant.
Once well-cleaned, you can start applying the protectant that you bought. If you have a hard top, you may want to use a good wax or paint sealant along with a polisher. For soft tops, it would be best to use the proper protectant for the type of material you have. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions to the tee.
